Amazon.com Product Description
Dark and sleek with colorful dual screens, the LG Flare from Virgin Mobile is more than just a pretty face. In addition to clear voice communication, this svelte clamshell phone also offers text messaging and connectivity to your Facebook account as well as Web browsing. It's also one of the first handsets available from Virgin Mobile with Bluetooth wireless connectivity for communication headsets. Other features include voice-activated dialing, a speakerphone, pre-loaded games, and Spanish language menus. It runs on the 1900 MHz CDMA network with Virgin Mobile's prepaid service, which requires no annual contract.

Featuring a glossy piano-black face, the LG Flare features dual full-color screens, wireless Bluetooth communication, and easy text messaging.
Virgin Mobile Service
With Virgin Mobile, you pay only for the calling time you use. You can choose a plan that's based just on minutes (with rates between 10¢ and 20¢ per minute) or a monthly plan with no annual contract (with select plans offering unlimited calling on weekends and after 7pm on weekdays). You can easily Top-Up your Virgin Mobile account right from your phone. First, buy a Top-Up card at one of the thousands of retailers that carry them; or register your debit card, credit card, or PayPal account at the Virgin Mobile USA web site in order to add minutes to your account directly from your phone.

Additionally, you can choose from a variety of mobile messaging plans, which includes text and picture messaging, email, and IM (via AOL and Yahoo!). Virgin Mobile USA's national coverage is powered by the nationwide Sprint PCS network.

Virgin Mobile contributes 5 percent of profits from downloadable content to The RE*Generation, its pro-social initiative to help homeless teens, as well as provides postage-paid return envelopes in every new package for customers to recycle old phones.

Phone Features
Featuring a glossy piano black finish on the front of its clamshell body, the LG Flare also has a small, full-color LCD on the outside that displays battery life, signal strength, current time, and incoming calls/messages against a fiery red background. Flip the phone open to view its larger interior screen and keypad (with five-way navigation pad, send/end keys, soft keys, and dedicated volume and Web buttons).

Because the Flare is Bluetooth enabled, wireless communication headsets can be configured with the phone. It also supports up to 20 saved Bluetooth pairings--great if you use multiple Bluetooth headsets. And the phone incorporates a jack for an earphone as well as a full-duplex speakerphone for total hands-free operation.

Support for basic text messaging is built into the Flare, as is connectivity to Facebook and other social networking sites on your phone. A built-in wireless web browser lets you surf Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) 2.0 sites via the Virgin Mobile Web service. With VirginXL, you can access a variety of music, entertainment, and information services from your phone, as well as download ringtones and games (additional charges applicable). Other features include:

  • Up to 500 contact entries
  • Voice-activated dialing
  • Six unique ringtones for incoming calls and three text message tones
  • Choose a custom Ringback Tone for each of your callers to hear while they wait for you to pick up
  • Real music ringtone support provides access to clips from hit songs (additional charges applicable)
  • Vibration option for when you need to keep your phone silent
  • Preloaded games include Pac-Man and Tetris
  • Personal organization tools: calendar, alarm clock, note pad, tip calendar, and world clock

Vital Statistics
The LG Flare weighs 2.72 ounces and measures 3.54 x 1.85 x 0.78 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 3.5 hours of talk time, and up to 170 hours of digital standby time. It runs on the 1900 MHz CDMA frequency.

3 out of 5 stars Better Out There...   February 15, 2010
A. Tweedle (Jupiter, FL, USA)
There's no doubt about it that prepaid phones are definitely the new money-savers these days, but I think you should be getting your money's worth. This phone is ok, but there are better deals out there. I use Straight Talk and it is only $45 for unlimited calls and texts and is overall saving me over $500 a year. Plus it is on the Verizon network so I get awesome coverage. Just spreading the word to those who would like to save their money the smart way :)

1 out of 5 stars Horrible customer service - bad coverage   February 11, 2010
Richard E. West (Marina Del Rey, CA United States)
We've had a virgin mobile phone for about two years and it seems that the service just gets worse and worse. Customer service is terrible! And don't even think of canceling as you'll spend all day on the phone. It seems like the "Hotel California" of phone companies - you can check in but you can never leave. It looks like I may have to report my credit card missing and change credit card numbers to get them to stop charging me.

Did I mention that the coverage was bad? At least in Southern California.

5 out of 5 stars Love the Flare   September 15, 2009

For the price, this is a very good phone! I have the Black Flare but just got the silver limited edition one and it's really nice! The phone is very sleek and it looks really nice. I have read about numerous problems people were having with the internet- I actually prefer using this phone for the internet because of the high quality graphics. It's nice and loud and what's really nice is there is an outside light that blinks red when you have a new message or call. It's small so it fits in any pocket really nice and it's lightweight. The only downfall is I wish it had a camera but I paid $19.99 for the phone and you can't go wrong with that price.
Highly recommend 5/5

3 out of 5 stars You pay what you get.   September 14, 2009

It is cheap and you pay what you get with the phone, the voice breaks up sometime, you have to know the tricks to talk properly. No internet, texting is a nightmare. Again, you pay what you get.

1 out of 5 stars horrible phone, low battery life, bad GUI   July 2, 2009

First I'll mention the pluses with this phone. First its very cheap. It has a very strong body, stronger than even my Nokia. The vibrator on it is also fairly strong (most phones have a weak vibrator that I rarely feel).

Now for the bad stuff . . .
1) It has port covers that look very fragile (for battery, etc). None have broken after 2 months use, but I've been very careful.

2) The battery drains *very* fast when you have low or no signal. For example, despite not using the phone, spending 8 hours at work in a no-signal basement literally drains 50% of the battery. The phone feels very warm to the touch whenever in low/no signal areas. A fully charged battery will die in under 24 hours if your phone is in a no-signal area (ie go camping, spend time in subway, basement, etc.) I keep my phone off 50% of the time for fear I'll be stuck with a dead battery (happens all the time with this phone). I have to charge this phone almost daily, where on my 4 year old cheap motorola phone I haven't once replaced the battery, and it still holds a weeks worth of charge!

3) The 'airplane mode' is very useful. I use it to turn off my phone to prevent the battery from dieing in low/no signal areas.

4) The top LCD that displays time is horrible. I can't see it outside even on a cloudy day, and it doesn't update the time unless your phone has a signal. It also displays the last time you checked it for about 1 second before displaying the current time (requires a button push).

5) The GUI is absolutely horrible. It takes 3x more button clicks to get anything done compared to all my other cheap phones I've owned. No customizable hotkeys.

5) My four year old ultra cheap Motorola cell phone can run Java 10x faster. The Flare takes minutes to load up a simple Opera browser.

6) You have to read the same message twice for it to stop telling you that you have new messages.

7) Internet sucks on it. Virgin had me go through this 3 phone call multiple day process trying to get it to work, and finally they said 'its a known problem and engineers are working on it, call back in 72 hours'. Well, I've called them once every 4 days for an entire month, and they kept saying the same thing. Two months have passed, still no internet. On very rare occasions, say 5% of the time I try, I can get a connection. But its *very* slow. Way slower than on my 4 year old cheap motorola phone.

8) No SIM card. Doesn't work with any phone backup software I've tried.

Garbage. I'm buying a new phone.
