5 out of 5 stars "HOTTEST" HOT SPOT   July 24, 2010
F. L. Smith (on the road trucking)
I drive truck over the road and have broke a number of "air cards" and /USB cards by my laptop taking a fall in a moving vehicle. All were my fault I must admit. I would leave the laptop unsecure and it would fall. This device allowed me to be completely free and "wireless" and not have to worry about something sticking out of my laptop. I have had very few issues with mine. From the # of bad reviews I feel lucky (for once) and maybe I got a good one. It does get VERY hot and I have unplugged it and put it in my fridge a few times to cool it down or directly over the a/c vent in my 18 wheeler. I don't really know much about speeds and technical data, but if I can pull up a youtube video and the red line goes way ahead of the play bar I feel like I am at 4G speeds!!! haha 3G has worked fine for my use with an occasional WTF when things are really slow. I gave it 5 stars and the only issue I had was overheating a few time... but after all... it is a HOT spot. BATTERY LIFE is OK with the 1800mAh battery. I have read with my EVO phone that the hot spot feature KILLS the battery on my phone (1500mAh) fairly quick so I expect there is not a lot that can be done other than keep it plugged in most of the time like I do anyway. I just turned on my hot spot feature on my phone and I am doing away with the Overdrive as my phone can do the same thing cheaper. I was grandfathered in and had unlimited 3G on the overdrive. I have never been capped on my usage. I am using my laptop and hot spotting off my EVO phone as I type this review. It does pause my internet when I get a call, but I am saving $40 a month so I will deal with it. After my great experience with the Overdrive I was surprised to read all the bad reviews and people saying it should be recalled. I like it.

5 out of 5 stars Sprint Overdrive rocks!   July 10, 2010

I've had mine about 4 months now and it's been a real life saver while traveling on the road. I rarely get 4G speeds, but 3G is like on steroids most times. It beats the heck out of the broadband card I had in my laptop. I have not had any of the problems others are experiencing. Those with issues make sure you update the firmware to version 2.06.06, released on 06/09/2010, as many complaints seem to be addressed in the update. Just a great little device.

1 out of 5 stars WiFi? NoFi   July 7, 2010
Stephen P. Herman
This device worked for a few minutes then lost the signal. I kept getting an error message on my iPad to reenter the device's password. The signal kept dropping. And good luck trying to get through to Sprint. One day they gave me a cock-and-bull story about some problems with the tower right in my office neighborhood, in Manhattan. It'll be fixed today, I was assured. Well, it didn't work anywhere else, either. I finally returned it and canceled my account. Glad to be rid of it!

1 out of 5 stars Great promise, abysmal performance (Good customer service and technical support, though)   June 26, 2010

Unfortunately, I have to echo the bad experiences of many of the 1-star reviewers here.

Here are the annoying things I wish I had known about the Overdrive before I got it:

* It takes a really long time to start up. If you just want to hop on your phone or your iPad to check email, get ready to wait anywhere from 1 to 3 minutes for the device to turn on and connect to the 3G or 4G network.
* The device gets hot. Really hot.
* The battery life is nowhere close to four hours.
* The one-button interface to the device does not behave consistently. You might think you've turned the device on and find that it's powering off. You may power off the device and find an hour later that it's still on. Either I'm an idiot user, or this is terrible user interface design. Maybe both.

Despite all this, here's the real deal-breaker for me:

* I bought the device and the data plan to provide data to my iPhone and my iPad. Unfortunately, there is some problem with connecting iPhone and iPad devices to the Overdrive. After a few minutes (or sometimes tens of minutes, or even longer) of being successfully connected to the Overdrive's wireless network, the connection mysteriously drops, and attempts to reconnect often (but not always) require you to re-enter the device wireless password multiple times (sometimes more than 10 times) before reconnection is successful. For Sprint technical support, I was able to reproduce this disconnection/multiple-password-prompt problem 7 times within 20 minutes of browsing the web on my iPad. Each time the device drops the connection, it takes an average of 2 minutes to reconnect, sometimes as much as 4 minutes.

Fortunately, Sprint customer support and technical support are very helpful and willing to accept that the problem is with their device, not with my Apple devices or with me. I experienced the same problems with two devices--the first with the Overdrive that Amazon shipping me, the second with the Overdrive the Sprint store provided as a replacement for the first, which their technicians verified as having a hardware problem. In addition to the price of the monthly data plan, I've spent about five hours of my life dealing with device replacements and talking to Sprint customer support and technical support. I didn't cancel my plan within the 30-day money-back guarantee window, but Sprint was willing to waive the hefty cancellation fee when I spent the time to get my connection problems verified with their technical support team.

Don't buy this device. Wait until they get the kinks worked out.

1 out of 5 stars Poorest Implementation of a service I've ever seen   June 18, 2010

Let me tell you right now: You will not get the speeds they advertise on this device. Will. Not. That's is practically a sure thing, and with this costing $60 a month, that is a deal breaker. Nobody should have to pay that much for what amounts to (on average) speeds that are below that of even ISDN.

Even if you do get the advertised speed on this device, it will be quick to overheat and freeze, leaving you disconnected until it can cool down. Usually afterwards, it'll be no where near as quick.

If you live in Boise, Idaho, DO NOT GET THIS. That's pretty much as much as I can say.
