Plain and simple... thin sound!
Noise reduction was VERY minimal
My good ol' Koss spark plugs sound far better
Amazon's return procedure was stellar!

3 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing   December 31, 2009

If you are looking for a device that will bring down a curtain of silence on the barking dog next door, the loud television while you're trying to study or the housemates who talk too loud, this won't really help much.

As other reviewers have noted, the device primarily works like an old fashioned ear plug, physically sealing the ear canal against outside noise. Under most circumstances there isn't a great deal of noticeable difference once the earphones are inserted between when the device is switched on or off. Unfortunately, therefore, this is not your answer if you're looking for something for a little peace and quiet while reading a book.

Where the effects of the electronics are noticeable is in removing constant low rumbling sounds. As a passenger in a car, flicking the device on and off made no difference to hearing the conversations going on or the radio, but it did almost completely silence the sound of the tires and had some effect on reducing the engine noise as well.

It is quite good at reducing the continuous drone of a busy street nearby and does make for a much quieter flight (but not a silent one) because it does work well on jet engines.

I am somewhat disappointed with it as I was expecting it to have at least some impact on reducing the loud TV noise coming from the next room, but I guess it was never really designed for that.

On the plus side, I do like the compact design of the earbuds which fit completely inside the ear and permit me to wear them while laying my head sideways on a pillow.

From reading reviews of rival products, it appears the capabilities of this unit are similar to those of competing products, which is to say that the technology is not yet here, at least in affordable consumer products, to give you a device that will let you listen to quiet music in a noisy environment where the offending noise is not just a constant low rumble.

3 out of 5 stars Useful but......   December 11, 2009

Let me start by saying the quite quality of this product is much superior to standard ear pieces. However it is the ear piece itself that provides 90+% of the quiteness. Once you have inserted them into place in your ears, turning on the switch did almost nothing forany better sound-proofing. You might be better of finding these ears plugs and just using them, must be less expensive and would eliminate the need for the slightly bulky control portion that is part of the cord itself.

4 out of 5 stars Great sound with questionable noise reduction   December 1, 2009

I have been the proud owner of a fairly expensive pair of Ultimate Ears for several years now, and while I love the sound, they aren't the kind of headphones that I can throw in a bag or leave on the counter. They have survived this long because I take amazing care of them; packing them in a protective case, never leaving them out. For these reasons, I wanted to get a pair of headphones that would be a little bit more "rugged", if that make sense.

I recently purchased these headphones knowing that I wanted an in-ear style, and noise cancellation. I'm not a commuter, nor do I fly often, but I do like to wear headphones while shopping or doing menial tasks around the house. I figured noise cancelling headphones would help in loud areas, so I wouldn't have to have the max volume on my iPod all the time.

These are great sounding ear buds. My previous "rugged use" headphones were the cheap-o ear buds that came with my iPod. They were super muddy in the mids, and it made the low end seem heavy, if only for the lack of balance. I'm happy to say these headphones sound leaps and bounds better. The mids are far better balanced and the bass is more punchy and defined. Highs tend to be a little low, but I tend to be a bit critical considering my headphones of choice are my open-style Sennheisers. Alternating back and forth between my iPod ear buds and these, it would be clear to anyone that these are a drastic upgrade in sound.

Included in the box are several different sized tips for the ear buds (the medium ones are fine for me), a soft cover for the line in case you want to wear the cord over the ear, and a small (fake) leather bag to hold everything. Essentially, you get the same set of items almost all decent ear buds come with.

Using one AAA battery, these ear buds provide the lowest amount of noise cancelling possible. I'll put it this way, these cut out a lot of outside noise, but I honestly believe it has more to do with the fact that something is shoved into your ear in the first place. In a loud environment, even with the noise cancelling off, there is a noticeable lowering of outside noise. With the noise cancelling turned on, the difference is nominal. The range these work best in is dull non-bass rumbling (AC units, fans, engine noise). I find that these headphones work just as well without the noise cancelling as they do with it.

My only true gripe is the on/off switch is fairly high on the cord and has to be clipped onto something. The single AAA battery and the housing for it are heavy enough that if it's not clipped on, they seem to drag the headphones down. If the switch were lower, I could clip it to a pocket, but I have to clip it to my collar, and on occasion it falls off and almost pulls the buds out of my ears.

Overall, I'm happy with my purchase. I'm not convinced the noise cancelling is doing what it says, but the sound reduction is still very high. Add to this the clarity of the audio and you have a great pair of headphones that are light and portable.

3 out of 5 stars Not All That   October 27, 2009

Read Tech Edge (Fulkerson) nearly rave review on this product, then could not find the product. Recently tried to find it again and did. Noise cancel is okay, but not great. I wanted to be able to sleep on my side without huge earphones and pretty much can with only rare adjustment of pillow. However, very, very disappointed in sound quality.
