Great phone but DO NOT buy from Amazon they will BS you March 21, 2010 LadyDimpz I would not recommend to anyone to buy a new phone from Amazon because they will give you the complete run around that they have done with me. I ordered my phone a week ago and did 2 day shipping they told me that I had to call T-mobile so that I can run a credit report. I was approved and T-MOBILE sent Amazon the email. Two days later I got an email that said I need to confirm my update so I did that. Last night I found out the phone STILL has not been shipped out. So very furious an frustrated I called Amazon and the people act as if they don't know what they are doing and their customer service skills are terrible. I asked to speak to a manager and they had me on hold for a HALF HOUR and the manger told me that T-MOBILE didn't send out a report to them which was a complete lie because I called T-mobile and said that it's nothing on their end because there should never be any issues because I was approved instantly. NEVER again will I buy another item from Amazon. Its ridiculous.
AMAZING PHONE March 16, 2010 Jesse N (New York, NY USA) I've bought this phone after being a sidekick LX user for two years. This phone is so reliable and durable. There's a ton of free apps from android. Actually all the apps on my phone are free. You can make your own ringtones for free with the RingDroid app (free) and everything. Android really lets you customize your phone. This in my opinion is the best android phone with t-mobile. Online it looks like a teenager's phone, but in person it's really sleek and sexy. This is by far my favortie phone, it does everything I need it to do and more. Great with emails, IMs, and social networking as well. It takes gorgeous pictures with the 5mp camera, and the video recording is good enough to upload straight to youtube which you can do with the youtube app that comes pre-installed. Great phone I highly recommend this for everyone.
Good concept and features, mediocre execution March 13, 2010 Mike S. 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I tried this phone for about 2 weeks, the time limit that my carrier gave me to return it. I liked the features, but took issue with many little problems that popped up. I've chatted with a few people that really like the phone, so you may not take as much issue with my "cons" as I did.
PROS
+ Nice large visual interface w/ side alphanumeric keypad that is easy to use/has friendly tactility
+ Cool apps for Android... everything from barcode scanners to pregnancy calculators to streaming news media
+ Relatively intuitive interface
+ Construction that feels like good quality
+ Feature-rich: GPS, email, Facebook, browsing, camera
+ Motoblur sounds cool in concept... can wipe phone remotely, save contacts if you lose the phone, locate phone via GPS remotely (which would have been great when I lost my last phone on top of a mountain :=)...
+ Full-sized audio output
CONS
- The touchscreen "buttons" are small and I (who do not have overly large fingers) did not enjoy the poor response
- The OS and programs are often sluggish.
- The audio quality is mediocre at best. Voicemail appears to download as audio files which are _very poor_ quality. Also, I noticed a constant "clicking" in the background while talking/listening.
- When I buy a phone, it should work well as a phone. It shouldn't be a task to make a call... there are no send/stop buttons. Making a call really requires more steps and small touchscreen buttons than necessary. Also, the number of bars indicating reception was on average _lower_ on this phone than my 5-year-old Motorola flip phone!
- It's bulky and heavy, especially with any additional protective cover.
- As of March 2010, the operating system is 1.5... why??! The application for which I primarily bought the phone (Epocrates)--as well as many other apps--require 1.6!! Supposedly they're supposed to upgrade to 2.1 soon, but I'm not willing to hold my breath.
- If you have the "Dec 1969" date problem--as I did--where the phone, after an upgrade to the OS, locks up and requires a "reboot" and will not log in to Motoblur because of a "clock problem"... there IS a solution. Search on the web; there is a zip file that can be downloaded an installed on the phone that will fix this.
- Cannot delete pre-installed applications. Really?! this is a basic feature that the phone lacks. Makes navigating apps a chore.
- No good file manager
- This can probably be adjusted in settings, but the little LED in the corner that alerts me to new texts/missed calls also blinks if _anything_ happens... e.g., new mail, new Facebook message, wireless available, etc., etc. so it is CONSTANTLY blinking.
- No camera flash
- Chews through the battery life quickly... not unexpected with so many features and a bright screen!
Overall for me, I need a phone that is phone... that will easily make/receive calls and text-message. This didn't do it for me and ended up being cumbersome and a huge distraction.
Android OS is AWFUL! March 12, 2010 tm121 (AZ) I have been using a Motorola Cliq for about two months. My last phone was a Blackberry Curve. Overall the Cliq is a solid phone from a hardware perspective, although the left-handed pointer is rather odd given the majority of the population is right handed. Unless you are ambidextrous or left handed, the pointer will be unusable.
From the software perspective, the Android operating system is horrible and barely usable. While it is cool to surf the Internet because of the larger screen, the phone is barely usable as a phone. On incoming calls, pushing the big green "answer" button typically does nothing. Most of the time my incoming calls end up in voicemail while I repeated push, tap, hit, or beat on the answer button to no avail. Then I have to call the person who called me, which increases my minute usage. Android also has an odd habit of pocket dialing people in my contacts list, particularly those on speed dial, even while the screen is locked, further increasing my minute usage and resulting in odd call backs from friends and business associates.
The Android marketplace is as well designed as Blackberry's which means it stinks. Applications are not properly tested or vetted (like Apple does for the iPhone) so there is a huge quantity of junk and non-working applications many of which crash the phone. Some applications, particularly Twidroid, seem to updated daily causing constant downloading and reinstallation over and over again.
If I had to do it over again, I would have upgraded to a newer Blackberry. If Apple would sell the iPhone for other providers other than AT&T which has the worst coverage in the Phoenix metro area, I would look at an iPhone. If you have an iPod Touch as I do, the primitive touch screen interface of Android takes a lot of getting used to.
Battery life is horrible! Plan on buying and keeping 1 or 2 spare charged batteries because the Cliq turns into a brick around late morning unless its continuously charged. And don't think plugging this puppy into a USB port or the wall for a quick 20-minute refresh will do anything. Plan on 6 hours to recharge. You will have to charge nightly and several times during the day. In comparison, my Blackberry only needed to be charged every 4 days with the same amount of usage.
Google should stick to search engines and browsers because they don't know the first thing about making a usable phone operating system. I can't wait until T-Mobile will allow me to upgrade again and I chuck this beast in the trash can!
Had to return it February 24, 2010 Chloe (United States) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I didn't have such a great experience with this phone in just one week I had already experienced enough problems with it to make me want to return it. The first problem was dropped calls, I spent more time redialing numbers, then having an actual conversation. Second, was the poor battery life, I would charge this phone during the night and by the time it reached noon, the battery was more than halfway drained. The last straw was when I noticed the back light on the physical keyboard stopped working all of a sudden. I googled a solution for the back light problem, and apparently lot of others had the same issue, and the only solution was to exchange or return the phone. In fear that I would get another lemon I ended up exchanging it for a completely different phone. Now I'm not gonna say that everything on this phone sucked because it didn't. I did really enjoy the web browsing experience, and the app store which contained lots of free apps. I also like the customizable home screen, and all the different little widgets you can add to it. The touchscreen was okay even though sometimes it was a hassle to scroll with it, and sometimes the end call button was unresponsive, and the touch keyboard was just impossible to type with. As for the Motoblur feature I guess its pretty convenient for those who like to keep updating their social networking accounts without having to go into the app itself to do so, it is a little annoying, but you can remove that widget off your screen, if you feel its too much. I personally didn't care much for it. I liked the physical keyboard and the fact it was pretty spacious, I was texting super fast with it. I also like the slider build it was really nice and firm and non-wobbly, making it a sturdy phone. If the backlight problem hadn't occurred most likely I would've kept this phone.
